How to say thank you to clients 101

The first thing to learn about saying thank you is to just say it! The second thing is the easier it is to say the more likely you are to say it. Following are some ideas of basic, fun and easy ways to say thank you to a client in a way that may be different for you. When you change your behaviour towards people, people change towards you so try saying thank you in a way that’s different for you and watch your relationships with clients or colleagues blossom. People always appreciate being appreciated so the impact of your thanks will be exponential!

  1. Say thank you by texting: Set up two thank you templates in your cell phone and start hitting the send key. A thank you template can say anything from “thank u for being u” to “thanks for all your support. I really appreciate it.”   You can send these off as and when required or even better, Send one each day to someone you are wanting to give thanks to. Make it part of your daily routine and watch it land.
  2. Say thank you by email: write an email with a list of things you want to acknowledge your client or colleague for. Write “thank u 4” in the subject line so they’ll be more likely to open it, repeat it at the top of the email and then write a list of 10 things you would like to acknowledge them 4. Remember, less is more; the less you say the more powerful your thanks will be.
  3. Say thank you by post: When I worked in Wellington in the early nineties, my mother used to send me a few central Otago cherries in an envelope through the post. Admittedly they often arrived squashed, but they always arrived with love. Send a bag of glow hearts or their favourite something through the post and watch them enjoy.
  4. Say thank you with food: If your client or colleague is the type of person who lives to eat, then food is love. Find out what food they love and drop it on their desk for morning or afternoon tea. Place your business card down beside it as an easy way of letting them know who has said thanks.
  5. Just say thank you: If saying thank you is something that doesn’t come easily then think of the impact it will have when you do say it! To help you, write a list of 10 ways to say thank you (e.g. thanks, thanks muchly  etc) and choose the one that feels right for you. Say it to someone each day for the next week and watch it land.
  6. Say thank you 201: If you want to take your thank you to the next level then read Dr Gary Chapman’s “The 5 Love Languages.” While this book focuses on the languages of love we speak in our more intimate relationships, it can be applied to any relationship. Once you’ve worked out your client or colleague’s language of love you will be able to say thank you in the same language as them. In the meantime thank you for enrolling in how to say thank you to your clients 101; enjoy graduating!
