How to Turn a Negative Into a Positive

The good news is that turning a negative into a positive is all within your power - it begins and ends with the way you see things. You are the mastermind of your own positivity so think positive, act positive and you will produce positive results!

Following are 7 tips on how to achieve positive results from your negative change.

1. be creative. What will this new change mean you can finally do? What opportunities will it bring into your life? Write a list of things you will now be able to do because of your new circumstances. Take time to look at the list. What did you learn from it?

2. asking for help is always a great starting point when something big happens. Perhaps your negative change is intended to throw you on a path of learning and rehabilitation. Who can help you with this? If you know the answer to this question pick up the phone and call them this week. I will always remember the first call I made to the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind.

3. Read books about people who have experienced negative change. Other people’s stories are a great source of inspiration and ideas when it comes to doing things differently. Challenge your mind to their way of thinking and copy one thing they do.

4. Create a vision of the positive place you want to end up. Creating is much more powerful than reacting so start today by creating a picture of where you want to be tomorrow.  Write it in six words or les. Your vision should inspire you into action so what’s one thing you can do today that will make your new tomorrow a reality. Now you know what it is – act!

5. Success is the launch pad for success so get one under your belt ASAP! It doesn’t matter how small it is – just do something you know you will be able to accomplish.  For me this was learning how to use the telephone, which lead onto EFTPOS, the numeric keypad and then the computer.

6. Keep your sense of humour It will be your biggest ally when it comes to taking on new challenges and learning. Start by sharing something embarrassing that happened to you with someone you trust. Have a giggle about it and then toss it away. Hanging onto these incidents are not helpful  - let me get the ball rolling - like the day I poked the man in his back when he was standing at the traffic lights. I thought he was the audible signal button! Oooops!

  7. Focus on the gain not the pain. Make your own list of things you no longer have to worry about. If it’s your job you’ve lost then write “soggy sandwiches for lunch” and “dishwater tea for morning cuppa” then great.  have some fun with this. If you choose to see the positives in your new situation then you will lift your thinking to think positively – act positively –and achieve positive results!
