What exactly does Julie do to inspire kiwi kids? Read on to find out the message behind her inspirational speaking.
Julie’s message is simple – turn your no into why not!
Not long after Julie went blind in 1997 she was asked by the Recreation Advisor at the Foundation of the Blind if she’d like to go cross country skiing! “Cross Country skiing” she thought – I don’t even know what it is, besides – it sounds scary! Julie politely turned down the offer to go away with other blind and vision impaired people and retreated to the safety of her own home!
When she got home she thought “You silly woman – you don’t even know what cross country skiing is – you’ve turned down an opportunity based on fear and ignorance” So – from that moment on Julie decided if anyone asked her to do anything she would replace her automatic “no” with “why not”. She’d try it once and if she didn’t like it she wouldn’t do it again. If she did like it she would carry on .....Who knows just where it might lead…..
When Julie visits Intermediate schools she shares this story and tells the students exactly where saying “why not” has lead her…
Julie often talks to a whole school assembly but is just as happy talking to a single classroom for a more intimate dose of inspiration.
Julie will also donate a signed copy of her book How to Make a Silver Lining – 8 keys for adapting to extraordinary change to the school’s Library where the kids can read how Julie went from the waiting room of the hospital to her 10 years blind party!
